JURASSIC WORLD

Well, after watching Jurassic World I felt that I had to write a review of my own. There have been a million of reviews and mine only expose my humble point of view but maybe you will be interested in reading it. ATTENTION because there are SPOILERS! So, if you have not seen the movie and you don’t want to be spoiled, it is better that you don’t continue reading.

Vayamos por partes…

Let’s begin…

JURASSIC PARK, EL REFERENTE/ JURASSIC PARK, THE MODEL

Jurassic Park logo

I am an unconditional fan of Jurassic Park. I was at the end of my teenage years when it was premiered. About to finish high school and begin university. It did not impact me in the sense of making me want to be a paleontologist. That happened when I was 4 years old with a book. But I recognize that I felt a great emotion when I saw the first pictures on TV and the enthusiasm that I felt when I went to the premiere. It was the first time I saw dinosaurs in the cinema that I felt they were not fake. They represented concepts that I had seen in documentaries at the end of the 80’s and beginning of the 90’s. Animals, which were dynamic and amazing.

Velocirapators in the kitchen scene

I have seen the movie a hundred times and, even today, when I am thirty a lot, I get emotional when Alan Grant sees the dinosaurs for the first time. That scene reflects perfectly the wonder that any paleontologist would feel seeing alive the dinosaurs that he is studying. And with the music of John Williams the scene is perfect. In my opinion the movie has aged well. The special effects are still good and the dinosaurs, made with a mix of animatronics and CGI, are still the best I have ever seen. If we compare them with the dinosaurs from Terra nova, Jurassic Park dinosaurs win absolutely!.

JURASSIC WORLD, LA NUEVA PELICULA/ JURASSIC WORLD, THE NEW MOVIE

After two sequels, that were not as good as Jurassic Park, we have Jurassic World. The expectation has been amazing. Those who were teenagers or children when Jurassic Park came out, we have been waiting impatiently this movie. We wanted to feel again the greatness of the first movie and we have analyzed the trailers with different opinions.

After watching the movie I have to say that I have liked it. It is a very entertaining movie, popcorn movie and with a lot of sense of humor. I have enjoyed watching it and in the end that is why we go to the cinema: To enjoy a good time. Now, has this movie the same quality as Jurassic Park?... I am afraid not. But I have to concede that it was very difficult to achieve. I think it could have been done better. Not only in the design of the dinosaurs but in the development of the characters.

NO SIN MIS TACONES/ NOT WITHOUT MY HIGH HEELS

Claire Dearing looking at Indominus rex

Why, when scriptwriters are writing strong feminine characters, do they fall into huge clichés? It is something that bothers me. In Jurassic World we have the principal feminine role, Claire Dearing, a powerful woman, a CEO. In the end, a successful woman. But, very quickly, they sell us the cliché, through a conversation with her sister that her life is empty because she does not have children and she is becoming a spinster (that is what the sister says). This could serve to discuss the conflict between family and professional life. This is a problem of our society that affects women in Science. But, it exposes another problem. Why is it so bad that a woman does not want to have children? Or being single? Or having a partner and not wanting children? In my opinion any of these options is good if it is what the woman wants freely. It comes to my mind the words of a certain Spanish minister that said in the Parliament that women only fulfill themselves by being mothers… Women can fulfill themselves in a million ways and having children can be the aspiration of one woman but  not for another. The two visions are completely correct. However, in the movie, Claire suffers and epiphany and realizes that true happiness can only be achieved by falling in love with the Velociraptor Whisperer Owen and having a couple of kids. Was that necessary? Would it have been possible to build a better character without falling into the cliché of the ice woman that discovers that being a wife and mother is the better way, like Doris Day? I really think it could have been better. We have the example of Ellie in Jurassic Park that, in my opinion, it is better constructed.

Claire talking with Velociraptor wishperer Owen

Another aspect that amazes me is that the feminine character never takes off the high heels during the movie. From morning to evening, Claire wears high heels that after walking through forest, jungle, old and new Park installations, they don’t break or destroy her feet and they are so comfy that she can run ahead of a T. rex as if she was wearing the last model of Nike or Reebok. Please, somebody tells me what brand are those shoes because I want a pair!. I wear high heels occasionally and I have worn them more often in the past. I can tell you that even if the shoes are the most comfortable shoes on earth, after eight hours wearing them your feet hurt like hell. But, maybe, they are special high heels. If that is the case I want them because they were really cute!

High heel shoe

Maybe am I getting too much into detail? Maybe, but these things got my attention in the movie. They didn’t decrease my enjoyment of the movie but it would have been nice to see more effort into the development of the characters.

¡Me encanta!

I loved Guardians of the Galaxy. I think it is one of the best movies I have seen lately. I loved Chris Pratt in that movie and in Jurassic World I loved him again. How are you not going to like Starlord with velociraptors? It is really cool. Who has not dreamed with having your own pack of velociraptors? I have. The scene where Owen drives his motorcycle and the Velociraptors is amazing. I love it!

Promotional poster of Jurassic World

To point out some things… let’s see… Did you realize that in this movie there is not a single paleontologist? A dinosaur theme park and there is not a hired paleontologist in the company! It is clear folks, we don’t have working possibilities in this industry… You could suppose that Owen’s character would have some background in Biology, Etology, something…but no, he is and exmilitar with a clicker to train velociraptors as if they were a dog pack. With a lot of positive reinforcement and rewarding good conducts. Would it had not been more logical that Owen would have been a biologist or a paleontologist? As far as I know that would have not incapacitated him to shoot a rifle. I think it would have added more spice to the character.

COMO ENTRENAR A TU VELOCIRAPTOR/ HOW TO TRAIN YOUR VELOCIRAPTOR

Talking about velociraptors… and about other dinosaurs, flying reptiles and marine reptiles that appear in the movie. About this there has been a lot of talking and probably I am not going to add anything new. It is true that the movie justifies very well the appearance of the dinosaurs due to genetic manipulation, and I am grateful for the explanation. They have cover their backs amazingly well. But, even then, there are details that could have been more worked. Nowadays there are amazing paleoillustrators. Julius Csotony, Danielle Dufault, Luis V. Rey, Jan Sovak, Mauricio Anton, Oscar Sanisidro… jut a few names that come to my mind now. Would have it been so expensive for a Hollywood superproduction to hire one or some of them for the artistic design? Probably it would have been breadcrumbs! An example… herbivorous dinosaur feet… they always do them as elephant feet and they are not like that! Gallimimus with teeth and short and weird positioned arms, Ankylosaurus with Nodosaurid ornamentation… Yes, I know, they are genetic monsters, but don’t tell me that nowadays there are not good reconstructions that they could have used, Pterosaurs, for example, could have been much better and I think that it just reflects a certain degree of laziness in the design.

Regarding the behaviour of the dinosaurs and other animals… well, there is a lot to talk about. Let’s talk about pterosaurs. Really, do you think that pterosaurs would have launched themselves over the humans as a furious plague? These animals were mainly piscivores, why would they go against humans? It makes no sense. In any case, if they were so hungry, they would have gone directly to the sea to catch a juicy fish. Moreover, these animals had incredibly fragile bones. They could have not raised a human being in the air and even less a Triceratops baby with their feet.

Then we have the theropod behavior to consider. We have velociraptors, tyrannosaur and Indominus rex. Indominus is a genetic monster, not socialized and when it escapes it begins to kill with no reason in a blood and guts orgy. Ok. As a monster, Indominus is acceptable. If we are going to create a chimera they could have been more imaginative, but I don’t complain… well, yes I do about a thing: Teeth! What kind of teeth does it have? Spinosaurus teeth? Because if Indominus has genes of Tyrannosaurus, Allosaurus, Velociraptor, Carnotaurus etc… I don’t see theropod-like teeth… Ok, that was the complaint of the teeth expert. What can I do, the eye goes there.

Oh those teeth...

Then, we have velociraptors. Oh man, they are wicked these velociraptors. From the first moment we can see that they are not trained at all. They listen to Owen because he is Daddy. Then they get into rebellious teenager phase and decide to join Indominus gang after a nice talk with the genetic monster. After the blood and guts orgy where they kill the big bad military guy, who I think they hated, they decide to change sides because, in the end, they love their Daddy and they are not going to allow that Indominus hurts him.

Owen training the velociraptors

¡¡Absolutamente espectacular!!

And that is the final battle that I love. I have to say it. Tyrannosaurus rex appears at last to save the day. After pursuing Claire, not putting too much effort on it as it does not reach her, it encounters Indominus and, of course, how is the T-rex going to allow another big boss in the Park? Epic battle. That videogame combo Tyrannosaurus + Velociraptor amazed me. It reminded me, in a certain way, to the combo Colossus + Wolverine in the X_Men. And then, to finish it all, the big final. They trap Indominus and the mosasaur saves the day in a triple combo. Absolutely spectacular!!

Claire calling T-rex

As spectacular it is the behavior of Tyrannosaurus and Velociraptor after the battle. Instead of fighting to death or eat the humans Tyrannosaurus looks at the Velociraptor as saying “Good job kid” and The Velociraptor “Same here big guy”. Another moment is when the T-rex goes away and Blue, the Velociraptor, looks at Owen with the same look my dog gives me when he wants a treat “I have been a good boy, can I have a treat?”. But in this case it would be “I have been a good Velociraptor, can I eat a human?”

FINALMENTE…/ FINALLY…

I could go on and on commenting more things. As for example, is the park only a cover for a military project?  I am sure we will see something like that in the sequel! I liked the children roles in the movie. The technician in the control room with his desk full of dinosaur toys was a clear sign for the fans. The nostalgia of the old installations of the park was a nice memory.

As conclusion, I liked the movie and I would see it again and it is probable I will do it. They could have done it better, but well, I recognize it. I want my pack of velociraptors too.
