Field season: Grande Prairie

The second stop of this field season has been Grande Prairie where the Pipestone Creek and Wapiti River sites can be found. Last year I went to these two sites and I have to say that they are awesome! The most abundant dinosaur that can be found in these sites are Ceratopsians, particularly Pachyrhinosaurus (thick-nosed lizard).

This dinosaur, specifically the species Pachyrhinosaurus lakustei, has been chosen to appear on the coins of 25 cents. And the most curious thing about these coins is that they glow in the dark!

Currie Dinosaur Museum.

The two sites are different in terms of accessibility and type of sediment. Pipestone Creek is quite famous and a large number of specimens of Pachyrhinosaurus lakustei have been found since the Royal Tyrrell Museum field seasons in the 80’s. The number of rests that appear is huge and stacked on top of each other. The richness of this site is awesome!
Furthermore, access to the site has been conditioned for visiting by guided groups. This is one of the activities of the new Museum that is going to be built in the area: PhilipJ. Currie Dinosaur Museum.

An overview of the site, you can see the place is beautiful and it is sometimes possible to see deers!

The other site is Wapiti River. This site is in the middle of a very steep cliff and to get there you have to use ropes! The first time I went there and saw the rope I was very scared, particularly on my way up, but with the days I overcome my fears and I could go to the site without a problem. In this site Pachyrhinosaurus remains can be found too although they appear in a very hard rock nodules. In these nodules usually there are remains of skulls! Other remains also appear in the clay layers that are much easier to dig.

El Aykroyd Family and Friends Dinosaur Ball.

The other occasion was to attend this year’s DinoBall. This year’s theme was Country. Although there were not many celebrities we had a great time and a lot of funds were raised for the museum.

The only bad news this year from Grande Prairie was the destruction of a hadrosaurskeleton, possibly a new species, by vandals. Police are still investigating and I am sure they will find the people that are responsible of this crime.
