Meet the Scientist!

El pasado 28 de Enero se celebro en la Universidad de Alberta el Harry Potter Day; Science, Magic and Medicine http://guides.library.ualberta.ca/content.php?pid=277824&sid=2296875.

On January 28 Harry Potter Day, Science, Magic and Medicine was held at the University of Alberta http://guides.library.ualberta.ca/content.php?pid=277824&sid=2296875.

Un evento para acercar a los mas pequeños a la ciencia de la mano de Harry Potter. La idea no pudo resultar mas acertada. El tirón mediático de los libros y las películas hizo que una enorme cantidad de gente acudiera a las diferentes actividades organizadas.

An event to bring science to children with the help of Harry Potter. The idea could not be better. The great popularity of books and films caused a huge amount of people to come to the various activities organized.

Dentro de las actividades que se ofertaban al publico había un taller de Defensa contra las Artes Oscuras, Pociones, Estudios Muggle y Cuidado de Criaturas Mágicas. Este ultimo taller fue organizado brillantemente por mis compañeros Victoria Arbour y Scott Pearsons. Among the activities there were different workshops such as Defense Against the Dark Arts, Potions, Muggle Studies and Care of Magical Creatures. This last workshop was organized brilliantly by my colleagues Victoria Arbour and Scott Pearsons. If you want more details I recommend you read the blog of Victoria about the event. It is worth it!

Por mi parte participé en una actividad llamada Meet the Scientist. Esta actividad consistió en que cada uno de los participantes diera una pequeña charla sobre su trabajo, la motivación que le llevo a ser científico, como es el día a día y luego contestar a las preguntas del público. Tuve el honor de compartir escenario con otros tres excelentes colegas: Dr. Usama Al-Atar, Jeffrey Newton y Amanda Scott.

I participated in an activity called Meet the Scientist. This activity consisted in that each of the participants gave a short talk about their work, the motivation that led us to be a scientist, how a normal day is for us and then answers questions from the audience. I had the honor of sharing the stage with three other excellent colleagues: Dr. Usama Al-Atar, Jeffrey Newton and Amanda Scott.

Gracias a ellos, no solo el publico que asistió sino yo también , aprendió acerca de la química y la energía solar, de los increíbles animales que pasan desapercibidos en el suelo de nuestro jardín y de como nuestro cuerpo se defiende de los virus. Yo por mi parte hable de mi propia pasión que son los dinosaurios, ¡como no! (y tuve la inestimable ayuda de una replica de un diente de Tyrannosaurus rex).
Fue una experiencia muy gratificante y divertida y no puedo mas que felicitar a los organizadores de este evento por el rotundo éxito que fue. ¡Este es el tipo de actividades educativas y de divulgación que genera  vocaciones científicas!.

Thanks to them, not just the public who attended but I also learned about the chemistry and solar energy, the incredible animals that go unnoticed in the soil of our garden and how our body fights the virus. I spoke about my own passion that is dinosaurs, of course! (and I had the invaluable help of a replica of a Tyrannosaurus rex tooth).

It was very rewarding and fun and I can only congratulate the organizers of this event for the great success that it was. This is the kind of educational and outreach activities that generates scientific vocations!.
